Moxibustion, or Moxa for short, is an ancient form of heat therapy that originated in China. Moxa uses the ground up leaves of the medicinal plant mugwort. These are either rolled into sticks or made into tiny cones and burned on ointment or a ginger slice. During Moxa treatment, the smoldering Moxa stick is held a few inches away from the skin, above the acupuncture point. The practitioner will monitor the heat level and work with the client to provide a therapeutic level of heat while maintaining comfort and safety. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences.
Burning Moxa has a distinct aroma which many people find very relaxing. (The scent is very similar to Cannabis.) The essential oils in mugwort have a significant effect as a form of aromatherapy or medicinal incense. +++Dorothy uses an indirect heat technique using smokeless Moxa.
Like all traditional Chinese treatments, the goal of Moxibustion is to bring the body into balance and ensure a consistent flow of Qi (Chi).
What is Moxibustion used for?
Pain due to injury, joint pain, or arthritis, especially in "cold" patterns where the pain naturally feels better with the application of heat
Digestive problems and irregular elimination
Gynecological and obstetrical conditions, including painful menstuation
Protection against cold and flu strains
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
Depression and low mood
Practitioners often do both Cupping Therapy and Moxibustion in the same clinic session when appropriate to the diagnosis and treatment strategy. Practitioners believe that the therapies increase each other's effectiveness when used together. Unlike Cupping Therapy, which is always done by a trained practitioner in a clinic setting, Moxibustion can be easily used at home. It is not uncommon for Chinese medical practitioners to train their patients to use Moxa on themselves to strengthen the effect of the clinical sessions between appointments.
Indirect Moxibustion Techniques
Indirect Moxibustion Techniques can be used with smokeless Moxa in conjunction with Cupping Therapy, Reiki, and/or Crystal Healing. The treatment by itself is also beneficial.
